Where To Find Cooling Centers Around Alexandria (Map)

With an excessive heat watch in effect this weekend, Alexandria has a number of cooling centers.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — With dangerously heat continuing, the National Weather Service says temperatures could feel like 110 to 115 degrees Saturday and Sunday. This kind of weather can quickly cause heat stress and heat stroke if the right precautions aren't taken.

For this reason Alexandria has identified numerous cooling centers available. Libraries, recreation centers and pools are all considered cooling centers. A full list and map of these locations is available below. Check hours to ensure the locations are open before you go.

The City of Alexandria has the following tips during extreme heat situations:

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Drink two to four glasses of cool fluids each hour. Be sure to provide plenty of fresh water for your pets too.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities and exposure to mid-day sun. If possible, stay indoors – ideally in an air-conditioned area.
  • When outdoors, stay in the shade and wear loose, light-colored clothing.
  • Do not leave infants, children, people with fragile medical conditions or pets in a parked car.
  • Monitor people around you, including co-workers, neighbors, and friends, for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Visit people with fragile medical conditions at least twice a day.
