Portsmouth 2017 City Election Results: Democrats Lead The Way

Virginians elected Democrat Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam to serve as governor. But that wasn't the only race Portsmouth voters had to decide.

PORTSMOUTH, VA — Election Day is over and Virginians elected Democrat Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam on Tuesday to serve as the Commonwealth's next governor. But that wasn't the only race that Portsmouth voters had to decide.

In the race for Virginia's lieutenant governor, Democrat Justin Fairfax defeated Republican Jill Vogel. Mark Herring, Virginia's incumbent Democratic attorney general, also defeated Republican challenger John Adams.

Local elections

Democrats Steve Heretick and Matthew James each ran unopposed for Virginia's 79th and 80th district delegates, respectively.

Stephanie Morales defeated Thomas "T.J." Wright in the race for commonwealth's attorney in Portsmouth.

In the three-way battle for city sheriff, Michael Moore defeated W. O. "Bill" Watson and Glenn Perry, Sr. with 47 percent of the vote.

F. D. "Frankie" Edmondson ran unopposed for the city's commissioner of revenue.

And in the race for Portsmouth's treasurer, Paige Cherry soundly beat Ron Melton and Elizabeth Psimas.
