Portsmouth Police: No Shooter Found At General Dynamics Shipyard

Police told Patch that a security guard in the shipyard reported an active shooter. As of 1:30 p.m., no shooter or victims were found.

PORTSMOUTH, VA — After receiving a report of an "active shooter" at the General Dynamics shipyard in Portsmouth, police said they found no victims and no shooter. Police tweeted Thursday afternoon that they were investigating report of a shooter at 2 Harper Ave. around 11:45 a.m. The address belongs to a shipyard used by the aerospace and defense giant.

A spokesman for the department told Patch a security guard in the shipyard made the report, but that they couldn't immediately confirm whether the call was "legitimate." Officers are clearing the area and the facility remains on lockdown.

General Dynamics confirmed to WAVY-TV it was on lockdown following an incident involving Navy personnel. Patch has reached out to the company and will update when we hear back.

According to the company's website, NASSCO-Norfolk's Harper Avenue Yard is located on 60 acres at Pinners Point, next to the Portsmouth Marine Terminal and adjacent to the Elizabeth River.

The facility is a full-service shipyard, the site said. It contains pier where ships are repaired and upgraded, as well as 50 shops and storage space.
