'BYOD' Policy Earns Fairfax County Schools Governor's Tech Award
The award praises the district's 'Bring Your Own Device' policy for increasing student access to online learning resources.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) was recently named winner of a 2013 Governor’s Technology Award for "Innovative Use of Technology in Education," for its Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative.Â
Maribeth Luftglass, FCPS assistant superintendent and chief information officer, accepted the award on behalf of the school system.

FCPS encourages students to bring in their own devices—including laptops, netbooks, tablets, and smartphones—"with the intent to increase student access to online digital instructional resources in the classroom," the district said in a news release.
"Providing access to the FCPS wireless network and internal instructional resources allows for increased creativity, communication, and instructional innovation in FCPS classrooms," the release continued.
