'Code Orange' Air Quality Alert Issued in Reston

A spike in air pollution Thursday warranted the alert throughout Northern Virginia for afternoon hours.

A “code orange” air quality alert has been issued in Reston on Thursday, the National Weather Service confirmed.

This means that the air will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children; people suffering from asthma, heart disease or lung disease; and the elderly.

To avoid the effects of air pollution, avoid strenuous activity or outdoor exercise if possible.

The air quality alert was issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the District Department of the Environment.
