Man Fleeing Reston Crash Gets Bitten By K9 Dog: Police

RESTON, VA — A man fled a Reston crash scene and then was bitten by a police K9 as he tried to escape, police say.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was driving a black 2016 Honda Fit on Reston Parkway in the area of Stevenage Road at around 12:12 a.m. on Wednesday when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and hit another vehicle, according to a report from the Fairfax County Police Department.

"He continued a short distance before stopping his car and then ran from the scene," the report states. "Officers located him a short time later and a foot pursuit followed. The suspect was found with the assistance of our helicopter and police K9. The suspect was combative, refused to comply with the officer’s commands and was bitten by the police K9."

He was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening due to the dog bite.

Charges are pending, police say.

The southbound lanes of Reston Parkway were completely shut down for a few hours after the crash.

Fairfax County Police tweeted shortly before 5 a.m. that the lanes were closed between Bennington Woods Road and Stevenage Road for a crash investigation, advising commuters to use an alternate route.

Fairfax County Police stated at around 7 a.m. that all lanes had reopened.
