RESTON, VA — A massive $1.4 billion project will soon tower over Reston, and officials broke ground on the project earlier this month, according to a report.

Bisnow reports that Brookfield Properties held a groundbreaking Oct. 7 for Halley Rise, which will be built on the site of a 36-acre office park at the corner of Sunrise Valley Drive and Reston Parkway and right next to the future Reston Town Center Metro station.

The development will be delivered in phases, with the first phase -- planned for 2022 -- featuring 640 residential units, 200,000 square feet of retail space, and 450,000 square feet of office space. It will also feature a Wegmans and the restaurant/bowling alley chain Pinstripes.

Halley Rise will also feature Optimus Ride, a company offering self-driving vehicles that will ferry tenants around the property.

"Halley Rise transcends the traditional work environment with world-class design, sleek architecture and state-of-the-art public spaces," their website states. "Located on the newly constructed Silver Line and minutes from Dulles International Airport, the neighborhood features 1.5 million square feet of innovative office space. Halley Rise gives workers an iconic location and accessibility unrivaled in the area."

The developer says that a movie theater and restaurants will also be a part of the building, and there will be a number of other features to make it stand out.

"Halley Rise is alive with year-round art installations and concerts in the park curated by Arts Brookfield, creating a hub of social and cultural activity," the website states. "Innovative architecture weaves light, calming space into the everyday bustle."

Property near the Reston Town Center Metro station has been a hot commodity lately. A developer purchased a 64,000-square-foot property near Halley Rise for $18.6 million earlier this year. The building, called Reston Metro Center II, was being used by defense contractor General Dynamics.
