LANK New-To-You Yard Sale: A Reston Icon
Let the community come together! The New to You children's yard sale is this weekend: Saturday, November 10th. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.
We live in a world today where we can get everything we need, from groceries to clothes, delivered to our front door without even having to step outside. As a parent, I feel it is more important than ever to instill in our children a strong sense of community and connection to the natural world, two key principles embraced by Lake Anne Nursery Kindergarten (LANK). I want my kids to grow up being able to utilize new technology, while embracing the intrinsic value of participating in their communities and caring for the environment. Since its inception, the school has worked hard to model these standards by fostering relationships with local businesses and community partners.
For more than 40 years, the New To You Sale has been orchestrated by parents who care deeply about their community and their school. When you come to the sale, you are welcomed by the Directors of the school, you walk through a building that has been painstakingly transformed into something akin to a department store, you peruse items that have been donated in-person, organized by parents, priced (discounts!), sorted, and promoted by volunteers. Buying used items is a wonderful way of practicing reuse. These goods will go on to be enjoyed by someone else; after all, their lifespan doesn’t end just because they’re no longer useful to one family. Within this one-day event, LANK aims to nurture the core Reston philosophy and bring people together in an old-fashioned yard sale.
Although our school and communities grow and evolve, we continue to hold on to these fundamentalvalues: that nurturing face-to-face relationships and paying attention to the physical world around us foster strong communities, engagement, and learning.
