Reston Earns Bike Friendly Community Designation

Trails, programs earn Reston bronze status from League of American Bicyclists.

Reston has been named to the League of American Bicyclists list of bike-friendly communities.

Reston was among 32 communities joining the national list in 2013. There are 291 bike friendly communities in 48 states, the league says.

League president Andy Clarke points out that bike-friendly communities reach deep into the suburbs now.

"One of the great challenges in envisioning a truly bicycle-friendly America is the need to transform suburban communities," Clarke said in a statement. . "Well, that transformation is evidently underway and is being lead by communities like Menlo Park, Calif.; Elmhurst, Ill.; Reston, Va.; and Richfield, Minn."

The League’s Bicycle Friendly America program provides a roadmap, hands-on assistance and recognition for states, communities, universities and businesses.

The BFA program is a tool for states, communities, business and universities to make bicycling a real transportation and recreation option for all people, the league says.
