Reston Native Going To The Olympics
Maame Biney, 17, locked up a spot on the U.S. Olympic short-track speedskating team for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

RESTON, VA -- A Reston native has secured her spot on the U.S. Olympic short-track speedskating team, becoming the first black woman ever to qualify for the American Olympic speedskating team.
Biney, a 17-year-old who was born in Ghana but grew up in Reston, couldn't contain herself after winning this weekend at the U.S. Olympic trials in Kearns, pumping her fists and screaming with delight at her accomplishment. She will represent Team USA in PyeongChang, South Korea in 2018. Video of her win is embedded at the bottom of this article.
“Whenever I get really nervous, I start laughing uncontrollably. That helped me,” she said during the NBC broadcast, as reported by the Washington Post. “I’m sorry; I’m just so nervous right now.”
