Reston Schools 2019-20 Calendar: Key Dates, Info

There's certainly plenty of summer left to go, but now's the time to start thinking about the start of the school year here in the Reston area.

We've examined the Fairfax County 2019-20 school calendar and compiled the following list of key dates for the upcoming school year:

• First day of school – Aug. 26
• Labor Day Holiday – Sept. 2
• Veteran's Day – Nov. 11
• Thanksgiving Break – Nov. 27-29
• Winter Break – Dec. 23-Jan 3
• Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday – Jan. 20
• President's Day – Feb. 17
• Spring Break – April 6-10
• Memorial Day – May 25
• Last Day of School – June 12

Going back to school is a big transition for kids who have become used to a few months of late nights and unstructured days. Here's a few tips you should follow to get them ready for the school year:

Begin to transition back to their former sleep routine. Don't wait until the night before the first day of school. Set up a regular bedtime and morning routine, gradually moving bedtime back to where you want it to be. You should start this at least a week before the start of school.

Set aside a day to go shopping for school supplies. You don't want to be rushing to get everything at the last minute. This is also good bonding time with your child. Prepare a list and take a day to make sure that, once the first day of school arrives, your child is ready to succeed.

Create an area for homework. Your child needs to focus when they get home and prepare to tackle homework, so create a space where they can focus.

Take your child to the doctor. An annual checkup right before school starts is a good way to make sure they are fit and ready for the school year.
