The YMCA Fairfax County Reston presented its volunteer awards at the 19th Annual Community Gala in November. Held at the Y on Sunset Hills Road, the gala raised $138,000 in contributions, including $38,500 in summer camp scholarships. More than 150 children will attend the Reston Y's summer day camp as a result.
Mike and Dana Scheurer of Reston were honored with the 2018 Joseph L. Ritchey Community Service Award for their time, dedication and commitment to the Reston Kids Triathlon. The triathlon is hosted by the Y and the Reston Association. In 2018, more than 300 kids participated in the event. The Scheurers have volunteered for the triathlon since its inception. Ritchey, an original Reston Y board member, set the standard with his commitment to the community.
Kathy Tracey of Herndon received the Jim and Karen Cleveland Partnership Award which recognizes exceptional leadership to achieve the common good. A Y member since 2005, Tracey volunteers with the Y gala and spin-a-thon, started a knitting group for donations to Cornerstones, supports the Kids Triathlon, and more. She embodies the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Sue Richey was honored with the Boofie O'Gorman Volunteer Service Award. It is presented to an individual for extraordinary commitment of time and resources to fulfill the Y's mission and serve the community. Richey was a 2018 gala co-chair, serves as the Reston Y board's vice chair, and will be the board chair starting in January 2019.
Ian Hansing, a senior at South Lakes High School, received a $1,000 YMCA scholarship for college.

Gala co-chairs were Valerie Romano, longtime Y volunteer and owner of Adventures in Paradise in Reston, and Sue Richey, CEO of Richey Property Management in Reston. Hugh Taylor, retired vice president of Northrop Grumman Information Systems in Arlington, was recognized for his leadership as board chair.
The YMCA Fairfax County Reston also introduced David Rodriguez as the Y's new executive director, effective December 4. Rodriguez comes to Reston from Chicago where he was director of a Y.
