South Lakes Grad Adwoa Kessie Dies

The medical technician and health educator leaves behind three children. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to provide for their support.

RESTON, VA — Adwoa A. Kessie, a 1999 graduate of South Lakes High School, died recently, leaving three children.

Adowa was born on July 2, 1980 in Alexandria, Virginia, to Agnes and Andrew Kessie. She attended South Lakes High School, Gwinnett Tech and Everest College, in pursuit of a degree in respiratory science and American Sign Language. She was a dedicated medical technician and health educator who was passionate about helping people. Her next goal in life was to pass her certification exam and begin practicing in respiratory science.

Adwoa was like a bird, a free spirit whose kindness knew no bounds. She never held a grudge against anyone, but found ways to build a bridge to reconciliation.

Her love for her children and family was evident in the way she tirelessly worked to support their endeavors. She was committed to helping others and would literally give up her last dollar, the clothes on her back, and even her own bedroom, to help friends and family in need.

Everyone who knew Adwoa was touched by her kindness and infectious smile, that could light up a room. Even during a pandemic, Adwoa selflessly continued to demonstrate her care and concern for others, by serving on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adwoa was preceded in death by her father, Andrew Kessie, and uncle, Yaw Twumasi. She is survived by her daughter, Qui’ Andra (19); sons, Eli (18) and Jarion (9); brothers, Benson, Edward and Andrew Jr.; sisters, Tina Anaman, Angel, Jacqueline and Francesca; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and her beloved mom, Agnes Arthur.

Marian Kusi-Mensah has organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise $50,000 to help support Adwoa's three children.

A celebration of Adwoa's life is planned for Saturday, Sept. 5, from 12-2 p.m., in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Attendees may register online.
