Southgate Community Center To Be Renamed For Former Supervisor

RESTON, VA — Southgate Community Center in Reston will soon have a new name, thanks to a motion introduced by Hunter Mill Supervisor Walter Alcorn at Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting. Alcorn.

In his motion, Alcorn asked that the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) work with the community to rename the community center for his predecessor, former Hunter Mill Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins.

"Cathy Hudgins tirelessly served our communities in Hunter Mill District, from 2000 until 2019 when she retired from the Board of Supervisors," Alcorn said, in a release. "She was a community builder with a passion for improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods that are often overlooked. One of Supervisor Hudgins’ biggest accomplishments and one that is a lasting legacy is the re-creation of the Southgate Community Center as a County-owned facility in Reston in 2006."

Hudgins worked to negotiate the land lease with the Reston Association, secured the funding, and helped shepherd the project to completion, according to Alcorn.

"It was her vision and dedication that has made Southgate Community Center the success that it is," he said.

The board adopted Alcorn's motion. Once NCS and community members have met and identified a process for implementing the renaming, NCS will report back to the board at a future meeting.

Southgate Community Center, which is located at 12125 Pinecrest Road in Reston, offers a number of facilities open to the public, including a gymnasium, teen center, computer lab, and multi-purpose rooms, among others.
