Tornado Hits Reston, House Damaged: National Weather Service

RESTON, VA — Forecasters had warning that storms could be severe Friday, and that proved true when the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down near Reston in the evening. Experts will determine the tornado's intensity on Saturday as they continue to survey storm damage.

One house sustained serious damage when a tree fell through the roof, while more tree damage was reported near Quietree Drive and Crosswind Drive, the Weather Service said late Friday.

The line of storms prompted tornado warningsin Stafford, Fairfax, Loudoun counties, Inside NoVA reported. There were no other immediate reports of tornado touchdowns.

The District of Columbia and northern Virginia were under a tornado watch Friday night that has expired. A flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service went into Friday afternoon and runs until 5 a.m. Saturday with thunderstorms capable of dumping 3 inches of rain in parts of the state.

"Showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage across the area this afternoon, and again this evening," forecasters with the National Weather Service wrote. "Damaging winds, tornadoes, and flooding rain will be possible. Stay weather aware this afternoon and evening!"
Counties under the tornado watch include Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, Greene, Spotsylvania and Warren.
