Virginia Home To One of Top 10 Beer Cities In World

RICHMOND, MD — While Milwaukee proclaims itself the king of all things beer, and every city in Germany has a beer-fest that draws hops-loving pilgrims from around the world, Richmond has laid claim to a new beer title: making VinePair’s top 10 beercation destinations for 2018.

The editors at VinePair — which bills itself as a site obsessed with experiences centered around drinking and connecting them to everything else in life — looked worldwide for the best, and most overlooked beer scenes. They spurned obvious American beer travel destinations, like Denver and Portland, and blew off mega-beer cities overseas like Belgium and Germany.

"For the beer lover looking to delve a little deeper into craft beer culture, an array of less obvious cities are becoming prime destinations for beer travel," the folks at VinePair wrote. So their top 10 list includes New York City, Rio de Janeiro, St. Louis, Seoul and Beijing.

Where does Richmond land on this illustrious list? N0. 1, thanks to the boom in breweries from one to 32 in the area in the past 10 years. Here's part of what VinePair says about the beer atmosphere in Richmond:

"Beer has blossomed in Richmond, and it’s time we all take notice. As the recently revamped Richmond Beer Trail will tell you, this Southern city is now rich with breweries. ... Hot brewers are The Veil, best known for its hazy, hoppy imperial IPAs (and one seriously gorgeous gose); Ardent Craft Ales, which paved the way for the brewing scene in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood and excels in every style; and Triple Crossing, whose grassy, fruity session IPAs should not be missed. For something truly unique, head to Carytown’s Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery, which creates constantly changing, genre-bending styles, like a beer-wine hybrid and a sparkling honey wine with fruits and flowers that mimics rosé wine."
