In June 2021, Roanoke’s Parks and Recreation Department will begin work on the conversion of the tennis courts in Washington Park to create basketball courts. This project is being done as part of the Washington Park Master Plan approved in 2008, which calls for the adaptive reuse of under-utilized tennis courts. Preliminary deconstruction work on the tennis courts has begun and the contractor will begin work in earnest in June. In addition to the redevelopment of the tennis courts into new basketball courts, the two existing basketball courts will get new goals and a new color application on the playing surface. The approximate cost of the project is $130,000, and the Department anticipates the project will be complete by the end of August.
