Job Seekers: DOs and DON’Ts From a Recruiter

A job announcement can bring in hundreds of resumes, but less than 10 percent are selected for a review/pre-interview. Here are a few pointers that will help you land that interview and, hopefully, the job.

  1. Read the entire job announcement (not just the title) and make sure you understand it to the fullest, as if it were the contract for a new car you were about to buy.

  2. Customize your resume to focus on exactly how your qualifications and experiences fit the position.

  • If you’re applying for a position in another geographic area, it’s assumed that you’re willing to move. I receive resumes from across the country from well-qualified people, but after contacting them, I find out they’re not willing to relocate.

  • Be up front and honest when interviewing. Market yourself for the things you know and can do, not what you think will get you the job.

  • Follow up immediately after the interview with a thank-you note. Take this opportunity to provide any information regarding your qualifications that you didn‘t get a chance to mention during the interview. Showing that you respect the recruiter’s time is another way to market yourself. And good manners go a long way — they can sometimes be the deciding factor between two candidates!

  • While these tips may seem common sense, you’d be surprised how many job applicants don’t follow them. In the end, there are many factors at play in the hiring process. Most are out of your control, so make sure you take care of the ones you can control. I hope you land your perfect job!
