Fairfax County Schools Schedule Alert for Monday; High Winds Knock Out Power

High winds that started late Sunday and are continuing to gust Monday have knocked down trees, power, traffic signals in Northern Virginia.

Due to power outages all Fairfax County public schools will open two hours late Monday. School offices and central offices will open on time. Here are more details from FCPS:

  • Morning preschool (special education) classes are canceled.
  • Afternoon preschool classes start on their regular schedule.
  • Full-day preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood Education Program-Head Start classes start two hours later than the regular schedule.
  • Morning field trips are canceled.
  • SACC centers will open at 7 a.m.
  • Morning transportation for high school academy classes is canceled. Transportation for afternoon academy classes will be provided.
  • Adult and community education classes will start on time.

Nearly 12,000 homes in Northern Virginia are without power Monday morning due to high winds, some predicted to gust up to 60 MPH, that began late Sunday night.

Dominion Energy reports that 11,649 homes across Northern Virginia are without power Monday morning. The areas without power include:

  • Alexandria: 222
  • Arlington: 2,731
  • Fairfax City: 23
  • Fairfax County: 7,240
  • Falls Church: 191
  • Loudoun County: 1,084

The Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfax County Police report downed trees in the following areas Monday morning in the Vienna, Reston, Great Falls, West Springfield and Clifton areas:

  • Cedar Lane/Park Street tree down,wires across the road near Thoreau Middle School.
  • Laurel Street/Maple Ave. tree down on wires.
  • Reston-Walker Rd near Minburn St. Tree down on power lines, blocking the roadway.
  • W. Springfield-Americana Dr/Oreana Dr,Guinea Rd/Queens Woods Dr,Clifton Rd/Brimstone Ln.Trees/wires down.Use caution.
  • Downed tree blocks Annandale Road in both directions at Wayne Drive.
  • Tree down across Clifton Road at Fox Shadow Lane.
  • Great Falls St/Margarity Rd closed for 8-10 hours due to pole/wires down. Please use alt. route. Follow police direction.

Please be aware that several roads are closed Monday morning due to downed trees:

  • Windover Ave NW (between Lewis & Pleasant streets)
  • Glyndon Lane
  • Cottage Street (between Locust Street and the shopping center)
  • Hickory Circle

In some cases, power lines are down as well. Of course, do not touched down lines!
