Full I-66 Closure Planned On 2 Nights At Route 123

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Full closures of Interstate 66 in both directions are planned two nights at Route 123, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

On Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, I-66 will be closed in both directions under Route 123 each night from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be installing bridge beams for the new Route 123 South Bridge over I-66 for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

I-66 traffic will be detoured at the Route 123 exit. Eastbound I-66 drivers will exit at Route 123 and follow police direction at the traffic signal to continue across Route 123 to the ramp back to eastbound I-66. Westbound I-66 drivers will also exit at Route 123 and follow police direction to the ramp back to westbound I-66.

Route 123 will remain open with police direction. All I-66 lanes will reopen by 6 a.m. Work is weather dependent and will be scheduled in the case of inclement weather.

VDOT will also open the new Jermantown Road Bridge over I-66 on or around Thursday, May 13. Demolition of the old Jermantown Road Bridge will start around the night of Friday, May 14.

VDOT is reconstructing the Route 123 interchange as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Express lanes will be added alongside three regular lanes from the Capital Beltway to University Boulevard in Gainesville. Aside from adding express lanes, the project will make interchange improvements, add new pedestrian and bike trails and more. The new Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
