Garrett Roe And US Men's Hockey Advance to Olympic Quarterfinal

Vienna's Garrett Roe and the U.S. Men's Hockey Team are heading to the quarterfinal in the 2018 Winter Olympics after a decisive 5-1 win against Slovakia Monday.

Roe netted the team's fourth goal of the game halfway into the third period. It was his second goal of the Pyeongchang Olympics, the first happening in the preliminary round overtime loss versus Slovenia. Scroll down to watch his latest goal below.

Other goals for Team USA included two tallies from Massachusetts' Ryan Donato, a power play goal from James Wisniewski of Michigan and one from Mark Arcobello of Connecticut. Troy Terry of Colorado collected three assists while Pennsylvania goaltender Ryan Zapolski made 22 saves.

Before competing in the Olympics, Roe, 29, has played as a forward for the EV Zug in the Swiss National League. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and spent time in the minor league among other professional teams. He began his hockey career locally, playing youth hockey for the Washington Little Capitals and Reston Raiders, which his father Larry helped found. Roe lives in the Vienna area during the summer

In the past, NHL stars have represented their countries in the Olympics, but the NHL recently decided to ban their players from participating. As a result, lesser-known players like Roe have been given the opportunity to suit up for their countries.

The U.S. team will take on the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 10:10 p.m. ET on CNBC and live streamed on NBCOlympics.com. Other teams advancing to the quarterfinal are Norway, Olympic Athletes from Russia, Canada, Finland, Sweden and Germany.
