ARLINGTON, VA — During these difficult times, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched a local heroes series to recognize these everyday people.

This submission comes from Vienna resident Karen Bune, who nominated Dr. Lawrence Stein of Virginia Hospital Center. Stein is a pulmonologist who works with COVID-19 and other critically ill patients. Bune says Stein is the reason her mother Eleanor lived beyond age 100 before she died in January.

Yes

What does the nominee do for work?:

Dr. Stein is a pulmonologist and former Chief of Staff at Virginia Hospital Center.

Why do you believe the nominee should be recognized or honored?

Dr. Stein has been working in the ICU helping Covid patients as well as other critically ill patients. He is the best of the best. His efforts to care for patients and his knowledge, skills and expertise are beyond extraordinary, and his efforts to face challenges and go the extra mile are above and beyond. He is highly respected among his colleagues and is often called upon for consultation and collaboration in cooperative efforts. When patients are in dire circumstances with their health, Dr. Stein is often the hero that is able to save them. Were it not for him, my mother would not have survived to live to be 101-3/4 before she recently passed away. He is a hero in so many ways and deserves recognition for a job well done.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about your hero?:

His unrelenting dedication to his patients with his exemplary kindness, compassion and skill in treating them.
