Madison boys' lacrosse ends season on high note
Defeats crosstown Oakton in thrilling 8-6 battle

Regardless of the sport, when a Madison season schedule is finalized, the players look to see when one game in particular is scheduled -- the annual crosstown rivalry game against the Oakton Cougars. A year ago, Madison fell short against Oakton 10-6 on the Warhawk's home field in what was mainly a one sided game dominated by the Cougars. This year's match up could arguably go down as one of the closest and most contested games in the last decade between these Concorde District rivals. Time of possession, shots on goal, face off wins, and goalie saves were all in balance throughout the game but in the end, Madison was able to go up three goals late in the game to secure a two goal victory over the reigning VHSL Class 6A state champions.
The game concluded both teams' regular seasons. With the victory, Madison secured the top seed in the Concorde District Tournament which begins on Wednesday May 8 when Centreville High School travels to Chantilly in a meeting of the #5 and #4 tournament seeds. The winner will travel to Madison to take on the Warhawks on Friday, May 10th in the district semi-finals. The other semi-final match up on Friday pits Oakton against Westfield. Keep an eye on the Vienna Patch Community Calendar for dates and times for the Madison games throughout the playoffs.
Madison ended the regular with a 12-2 record, the best regular season record for the Warhawks in the last five years. On top of the stellar varsity record, the Madison boys' Junior Varsity team posted a 7-1-2 season, so the future is bright for Coach Aaron Solomon's program.

As Madison begins their playoff run this week, they will have to maintain the balanced play on both sides of the ball and continue to win the battle for time of possession. When Madison opens the post season play, they will face either a Centreville or Chantilly team for a second time this season, and what worked in game one, may not be the same formula to win the second game. The Concorde District is arguably the toughest district in the state with 4 of the top 8 Class 6A teams in the state as ranked by Lax Numbers Website, so, while cliche, Madison will truly have to take one game at a time throughout the playoffs.
