New Cedar Lane Bridge Over I-66 Opens In Vienna

VIENNA, VA — Cedar Lane bridge over Interstate 66 is reopening Wednesday after reconstruction for much of 2020, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The bridge was closed on May 15 for demolition and reconstruction to accommodate a wider I-66. It is part of VDOT's Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project, which will add Express Lanes from the Beltway to University Boulevard in Gainesville and other transportation improvements. The Express Lanes, which will be alongside three regular lanes in each direction, are expected to open in December 2022.

The new bridge includes a sidewalk on the west side and a shared-use path on the east side that will connect to the 66 Parallel Trail being built from Dunn Loring to Centreville.

Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other bridge users should expect continued construction activity in the area surrounding the bridge. This work will include completion of nearby sidewalks, noise walls, and the shared-use path along I-66.

Fairfax Connector's Routes 462 and 467 will switch back to the pre-construction route using Cedar Lane bridge on Jan. 4. Until then, the routes have been modified, using Cottage Street and Gallows Road as a detour. Sunday service will also be added on Route 467 on Jan. 4.
