Oakton High Student In Running To Be Doodle For Google Winner

VIENNA, VA — An Oakton High School student is in the running to be a national finalist for Doodle for Google.

Google holds the contest annually, accepting art submissions from K-12 students across the U.S. for the chance to have their art displayed on Google. This year, students were asked to submit a doodle about what kindness means to them and write a statement explaining how it signifies kindness. The drawings must incorporate the letters of Google.

There were 54 state and territory winners chosen from 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. These winners have their art displayed on the Doodle for Google website, and they will be considered for five national finalist spots through a public vote.

Winners are categorized by state and grade level. The Virginia winner is Oakton High School's Sarah Naidich on the grade 10-12 level. Her drawing depicts a pipeline and reservoir, symbolizing how water and kindness are essential to the world.

Here's what she stated about her art on the Doodle for Google website:

Because I'm passionate about art, I love making cards for my relatives and friends. I drew a pipeline feeding water in to a reservoir to display how any act of kindness whether it's towards ourselves, each other, or the world is necessary for the world to thrive and retain its beauty.

The national winner will have the doodle displayed on the Google homepage for a day and win a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 technology package for their school or a nonprofit. The four other national finalists will win a $5,000 scholarship and have their art displayed in the Doodle for Google gallery.

Public voting is open through 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Aug. 21 (in Eastern Time, 2:59 a.m. on Aug. 22).
