Overnight Work On Bridges Over I-66 Impacts Vienna Area

VIENNA, VA — Amid ongoing work on Interstate 66 outside the Beltway, drivers should expect overnight lane closures and stoppages in the coming days.

Construction activities are happening on the Cedar Lane and Vaden Drive bridge, which closed as part of the I-66 Outside the Beltway project. The Cedar Lane bridge in Vienna closed on May 15 for demolition and reconstruction to accommodate a widened I-66 with Express Lanes, according to VDOT. The Vaden Drive bridge in Oakton closed in October 2019 for the same purpose.

Vaden Drive and Nutley Street

Work on the new Vaden Drive bridge work will prompt lane closures and 30-minute stoppages overnight from June 8 to 13. This will happen on eastbound I-66 between Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and east of Nutley Street. From June 8 to June 11, the eastbound direction will be reduced to one lane between 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. The eastbound direction will have one travel lane from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on June 12 and 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on June 13.

Drivers should expect 30-minute stoppages on the nights of June 9, 11 and 13 as crews lift bridge beams into place. On June 8 and 9, lane closures will extend past Nutley Street for removal of an overhead sign gantry removal and utility relocation.

Cedar Lane

Demolition of the old Cedar Lane bridge is in progress. Over the weekend, old bridge beams were removed from the Cedar Lane bridge over westbound I-66. Daytime demolition is planned for the remaining bridge span not over I-66 travel lanes early this week, and bridge beams over eastbound I-66 will be removed overnight next week.

Lane closures and 20-minute stoppages near Cedar Lane bridge will impact both directions of I-66 on different nights. The westbound direction will be limited to one lane between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on June 8 and 9, and the eastbound direction will be limited to one lane between 9 p.m. and 5 am. from June 10 to 12. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages for beam removal.

The Vaden Drive bridge is expected to be closed through summer, and the new Cedar Lane bridge could open in November 2020. Work is weather dependent.

The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project will add one Express Lane in each direction between the Capital Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The lanes are expected to open in December 2022. A separate I-66 inside the Beltway project is adding another eastbound lane from the Dulles Connector Road to Fairfax Drive in Arlington. The new lane will open in fall 2020.
