Tree Projects Prompt Road Closures In Vienna

VIENNA, VA — The Town of Vienna announced emergency tree work on Church Street Tuesday and other upcoming tree projects impacting travel. Church Street will be closed between Glyndon Street and Beulah Road for up to three hours starting at 9 a.m.

A project to remove and replant trees in the Nutley Street median will begin on Wednesday, March 4 and last about three business days, depending on weather. The work is being conducted on Nutley Street SW between Marshall Road and Maple Avenue. The southbound lane closest to the median will be closed on a rolling basis.

Crews are removing 11 trees that are dead or severely decayed. A Town of Vienna statement reads: "The median along Nutley is a high-stress area for trees. Stress factors that have contributed to the decline of these trees include heat, drought, salt, pollution, root and/or trunk damage, and poor or compacted soil."

Species of trees being replanted include willow oaks, lacebark elm and pistache, which are believed to be tolerant of environmental conditions similar to those on Nutley Street.

Other upcoming work will impact Maple Avenue. A single lane will be closed on a rolling basis from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday as crews spread mulch in flower beds. Work will begin on eastbound lanes at 6 p.m. and move to westbound lanes around 8 p.m.

On Friday, March 6, westbound lanes of Maple Avenue will be closed between Follin Lane NE and East Street NE from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a tree removal. According to the town, the black locust tree has an extensive crack at the base that has compromised the structural integrity.
