VDOT Plans I-66 Overnight Lane Closures At Beltway

According to VDOT, there will be several nights of lane closures and one night of all lanes being closed on westbound I-66.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Bridge beam installation will prompt upcoming overnight lane closures on westbound Interstate 66 at the Capital Beltway (I-495), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures, ramp closures and traffic stoppages will happen at night from Monday, April 12, through Friday, April 16. On Monday night and Wednesday through Friday nights, traffic on westbound I-66 at I-495 will be reduced to a single travel lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should anticipate multiple 20-minute traffic stoppages. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. each morning and by 6 a.m. on Saturday

On the night of Tuesday, April 13, all lanes I-66 westbound lanes approaching I-495 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. A detour will use westbound Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), which leads to a ramp to southbound I-495, then signage for westbound I-66.

Ramps from northbound I-495 to westbound I-66 and from southbound 495 Express Lanes to westbound I-66 will also be closed Tuesday night. The ramp from westbound I-66 to southbound I-495 will remain open. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Work is weather permitting and will be rescheduled in the case of inclement weather.

The work on the I-66/I-495 Interchange will add several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. There will be new access to and from the 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as new connections between express and general purpose lanes.

The Express Lanes between I-495 and University Boulevard in Gainesville are expected to open in December 2022. For more information about the project and traffic impacts, visit outside.transform66.org.
