Vienna Bike/Walk Challenge 2013: Day 1 Results

As of press time, more than 860 students walked or biked to class in transportation initiative.

Hundreds of kids from Vienna kicked off the fifth annual Vienna Bike/Walk Challenge on Monday morning, gearing up for a week-long competition in which schools try to encourage as many students to walk or bike to class as possible.

As of 1 p.m. Monday, 866 students were tallied walking or biking to school that morning, excluding those from Flint Hill Elementary School, which had not yet reported its totals.

Wolftrap Elementary had the highest number of participants, with 170, but Vienna Elementary had the highest rate of participation, with 34.87 percent of its student body walking or biking to class.

  • Rookie Challenge: An award for a school in its first year of participating. "The award goes to the school with the highest percentage of participants relative to the size of the designated walking population - the number of students who live within walking distance to the school and are not provided bus service, as determined by the school system."
  • Overall Winner-"Challenge Trophy": For returning schools, this is awarded to the school with the largest percentage increase in participants over last year's challenge.
  • Biking Winner: For new and returning schools, this is awarded to the school with the highest percentage of participants that biked.

The goal is to have a trophy that cannot be dominated by a single school and will likely travel from year to year, Vienna Elementary coordinator Sean McCall said.

Cunningham Park is currently the Challenge Trophy leader; Westbriar is in the lead for the biking trophy.

Patch will be out covering the challenge and keeping tallies throughout the week. Here are the standings for Day 1.
