Vienna's Windover Heights Marks 40th Year With Walk On The Hill

Vienna's Windover Heights District will welcome visitors for the annual tour. The historic district is marking its 40th anniversary.

VIENNA, VA—Each spring, visitors have the opportunity to stroll through the gardens of the historic Windover Heights District in Vienna. The annual Walk on the Hill will be held from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 and celebrate a few milestones.

The Windover Heights Historic District is celebrating its 40th anniversary, as it was established in April 1979. In addition, the Ayr Hill Garden Club will mark its 90th anniversary with a nature photography show featuring artists from James Madison High School, and the Vienna Arts Society will mark its 50th anniversary with custom-painted bench samples from its Take a Seat, Vienna public art initiative.

At Walk on the Hill, visitors get a rare glimpse into the historic district while the flowers are in full bloom. 47 properties and venues are featured on the tour. Information for visitors will be available at 277 Windover Avenue. A walking tour map is available here.

Activities include:

  • Walking tour of Windover Heights Historic District
  • Plein air artists and benches for the 50th Anniversary of Vienna Arts Society with show at 243 Church Street NW Suite 100 lower level
  • Native plant exhibits at Salisbury Springs (Ayr Hill Garden Club) and at Green Hedges School, 415 Windover Ave NW
  • History tour and talk by Historic Vienna
  • The Green Hedges Jazz Band performs at 288 Windover Avenue at 2 p.m.
  • Vienna Community Band performs at 3 p.m.
  • Hickory Grove performs throughout the afternoon in the log cabin at 223 Walnut Lane
  • Photography Show at 307 Windover Avenue presented by the Ayr Hill Garden Club

Sponsored by the Windover Heights Historic District residents, Historic Vienna Inc., and the Town of Vienna, the annual event is a local favorite and draws visitors from outside Vienna. The event is free, and punch and cookies will be provided.

Walk on the Hill is rain or shine. Parking is available at Green Hedges School, 415 Windover Ave NW, and the Vienna Arts Society's new 243 Church Street NW location.
