Virginia Girls Soccer: Madison Falls After Four Overtimes

McLean scores winning goal in Liberty District semis.

Madison High School girls soccer coach Grant Massey anticipated his team's semifinal match Wednesday night against McLean would be a close game.

But it seems hard to believe Massey would have anticipated how tight the game — which sends a winning team to the district championships — would actually be.

And at the end of regulation Wednesday, Madison and McLean entered overtime to resolve a 0-0 tie. Still scoreless after the first overtime, they entered another.

And during the fourth overtime, three minute away from when both teams would be forced to settle the game with penalty kicks, a McLean highlander scored, ending a hard-fought battle for the Warhawks as well as a 6-1 win streak.

The loss kicks Madison (10-5) out of the running for the Liberty District title. But the team will likely get another chance to avenge its loss as the Northern Region tournament begins next week.

Last year, Madison made it to the region semifinals before losing to Woodson High School.

Improving upon that performance this year would mean qualifying for the state finals.

It might not be a realistic goal, Massey said, but the girls work hard and have solid defense.

"We've had a magical season before," Massey said before Wednesday's game, noting it could happen again.
