Weekend Work Planned For I-66 Project Around Gallows Road
I-66 lane closures near Cedar Lane will happen overnight, but lanes of Gallows Road will be closed most of the weekend.
VIENNA, VA — Another week, another round of road closures impacts the Vienna area for the Interstate 66 widening project. Gallows Road will have ongoing lane closures for much of the weekend, and I-66 near Gallows Road will have overnight lane closures, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 to 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24 as crews install new bridge beams for the new Gallows Road Bridge over I-66. Northbound and southbound Gallows Road traffic will run on the southbound side of the road during these lane closures. In addition, flaggers will alternate northbound and southbound traffic in a single lane from around noon on Saturday, Aug.22, to 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23.
Pedestrian and bicycle access will be available on the southbound side sidewalk on Gallows Road. Entrances to businesses and the Dunn Loring Metro's parking garage and bus loop will not be impacted.

VDOT is replacing the Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate new Express Lanes on I-66 and make room for future improvements along Gallows Road. This weekend's lane closures will provide space for a large crane to set the beams for the new Gallows Road Bridge.
According to VDOT, the beams must be installed on the new Gallows Road Bridge during Metro's Orange Line closure, as the bridge is located directly above the Dunn Loring platform. The Dunn Loring and Vienna stations remain closed for the summer platform rehabilitation project and will reopen on Sept. 8.

The project's other major impact in the Vienna area this weekend will be overnight I-66 lane closures. I-66 east approaching Gallows Road will be reduced to a single lane from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. Additional 30-minute stoppages will happen overnight as crews lift bridge beams into place. All lanes will reopen by 9 a.m. on Sunday and 5 a.m. on Monday.
More overnight lane closures on Gallows Road at I-66 and overnight lane closures and traffic stoppages on I-66 are planned for the following two weeks as the bridge beam installment continues.
