VIENNA, VA — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

Town of Vienna and Fairfax County Government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

State courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Dec. 23-Jan. 3.

Animal shelter: Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 31 and closed Jan. 1.

Community centers: Vienna Community Center is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1. Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities will be closed on Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate regular weekday service on Dec. 31 and Sunday service on Jan. 1. Fastran will not operate after 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 through Jan. 1. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.

  • Giant Food: 6 a.m.-9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 6 a.m.-12 a.m. on Jan. 1. 359 Maple Avenue East, Vienna.
  • Whole Foods: 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Jan. 1. 143 Maple Ave E, Vienna.
  • The Fresh Market: Regular hours to 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Jan. 1. 150 Branch Road SE Vienna.
  • Harris Teeter: Open regular hours. 2675 Avenir Pl Dunn Loring.
  • Walmart: Open regular hours. 1500 B Cornerside Blvd, Vienna.
  • Safeway: 12 a.m.-8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on Jan. 1. 3043 Nutley Street, Fairfax.
  • Target: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 8 a.m.-12 a.m. on Jan. 1. 2905 District Ave #400, Fairfax.
  • ALDI: 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed Jan. 1. 8100A Arlington Blvd, Falls Church.
  • MOM's Organic Market: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Jan. 1. 8298 Glass Alley, Fairfax.

Libraries: Patrick Henry Library and all Fairfax County libraries close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1.

Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.

Parks: A majority of Fairfax County Park Authority operated parks are closed Dec. 31. All parks are closed Jan. 1. Visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/holiday-hours for more information.

Post offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.

Recreation centers: All RECenters except George Washington RECenter are open until 4 p.m. on Dec. 31. RECenters except George Washington RECenter are open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Trash and recycling: Town of Vienna collections won't happen on Wednesday, Jan. 1. There is no change to Fairfax County collections. Contact private collectors for service changes. The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 through Jan. 1.
