In the past, NHL stars have represented their countries in the Olympics, but the NHL recently decided to ban their players from participating. As a result, lesser-known players like Roe have been given the opportunity to suit up for their countries.
Roe told WTOP competing in the Olympics will be a silver lining of never making it to the NHL. "Ultimately, I still wish I could be playing in the NHL full time, but at the same time, another opportunity has popped up and it’s been great," he told WTOP. "I’m excited for the opportunity, and it makes it a little bit easier to not be in the NHL by being named to the Olympic team."
The 29-year-old is a forward for the EV Zug in the Swiss National League and lives in the Vienna area during the summer. He was chosen in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings and got to play for the minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers among other professional teams. Originally he began his hockey career in the local area, playing youth hockey for the Washington Little Capitals and Reston Raiders.
The Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from Feb. 9-25.
