Alexandria Crime Falls to Historic Lows
Crime in 2012 in the city decreased more than 9 percent.

The latest statistics show major crimes in Alexandria fell 9.1 percent in 2012 compared to 2011, according to the Alexandria Police Department.
Total so-called “Part 1” crimes, which includes homicide, rape and robbery, fell by 329 offenses in calendar year 2012 (from more than 3,600 to fewer than 3,300 crimes). It was the lowest level of these crimes in the city since 1966, according to the department.

Homicide, rape, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto thefts declined in 2012. Robberies increased by eight offenses.

“I am pleased that the City of Alexandria has continued to experience historic crime lows in 2012,” said Police Chief Earl Cook in a news release. “The reductions in crime and continued improvements to the quality of life in our neighborhoods are a direct result of the quality, hard work and dedication of our sworn, civilian and volunteer staff.
"Additionally, our strong partnerships with the community, Commonwealth’s Attorney Office and other City agencies play an integral part of the successful reduction in crime. We remain committed to keeping crime low and maintaining a safe and vibrant community.”
