Alexandria Man Arrested Near White House With Loaded Gun

Police had deemed the the Alexandria man's vehicle safe but recovered a loaded gun.

WASHINGTON, DC—An Alexandria man was arrested early Tuesday morning after police found a loaded gun in his car not far from the White House.

WJLA reports that Secret Service was alerted to a suspicious vehicle at 15th Street NW and New York Avenue NW around 2:30 a.m. After the driver reportedly told police the vehicle "contained a pressure switch with extra gasoline, officers searched the vehicle and found no explosives. They recovered a loaded gun, which did not have the proper licensing.

Bryan McHugh, 43, of Alexandria was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition as well as carrying a pistol without a license.

The scene had been cleared and the vehicle ordered to be towed around 5 a.m.
