City of Alexandria Observes Pedestrian Safety Awareness Week

From October 28 through November 2, the City of Alexandria will observe Pedestrian Safety Awareness Week. The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services, along with Vision Zero Coalition Partners, will launch an educational campaign, including a series of public events throughout the week.

The City will host three safety pop-ups at key pedestrian locations on Tuesday, October 29. Staff and partners will pass out giveaway items and provide information about the Vision Zero Initiative and some of the Vision Zero safety measure the City has implemented.

Vision Zero Pop-Ups

Tuesday, October 29

  • Beauregard Street and Rayburn Avenue – 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.
  • King Street and Washington Street – 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  • Cameron Station Boulevard and Duke Street – 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Also on October 29, the City holds its annual Operation Illumination promotion, which is tied to the end of daylight savings time. City staff will distribute free safety gear at locations throughout Alexandria.

  • Holmes Run near Eisenhower Avenue – 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
  • Patrick Henry Elementary School – 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
  • Francis Hammond Middle School – 2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Duke Street and Jordan Street – 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Metrolinear Trail near Braddock Road – 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Russell Road and Mt. Vernon Avenue – 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Finally, an opening event for the Mt. Jefferson Traffic Garden will be held on Saturday, November 2, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. A traffic garden is an international concept that paints or builds miniature road networks for children to use to develop their traffic safety skills in a low-stress environment. Mt. Jefferson Park is now home to the City’s first traffic garden! The grand opening will include a bike rodeo held by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The event will also include bicycle and helmet checks performed by local bike shops.
