Celebrate National Public Lands Day in Alexandria's West End by volunteering at an event at the city's newly acquired 5325 Polk Ave. site Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers will help remove non-native invasive plants from the northwest corner of the property, as well as pick up litter.Â
The city acquired this wooded area in December 2012. The city’s purchase of the 2.34-acre property used the $1.5 million provided by the Department of Defense to mitigate loss of open space in the West End, as well as $400,000 in city open space funds. On June 15, the Alexandria City Council held a ribbon cutting for the property.Â
The park is located at the north corner of the intersection of N. Pelham Street and Polk Avenue approximately two blocks northeast of the intersection of N. Van Dorn Street and Richenbacher Avenue in the west end of the City. Volunteers will meet at the park entrance.Â
