Earth Day: Shop with Reusable Bags for Chance to Win Free Groceries

Giant Food is offering shoppers the chance to win free groceries for a year for those shopping with reusable bags in honor of Earth Day.

To mark Earth Day, Giant has introduced a special green reusable bag available in all stores for a limited time. Additionally, every time a customer shops using one or more reusable bags through May 30, they will be entered automatically at the checkout to win free groceries for one year.

The Landover, Md.-based company also announced that has set a goal of reaching by 2020 “zero Waste,” which is defined as diverting 90 percent of waste going to landfills and incineration through the expansion of its organic recycling program and the creation of new opportunities for recycling cardboard and plastic.

In West End Alexandria, Giant has stores at S. Van Dorn St., 1476 North Beauregard St. and 3131 Duke St.

The new recycling program will include increasing consumable food donations to regional food banks. Any food that cannot be donated is also being reused as livestock feed, composted or converted to electricity. Currently all of Giant’s stores have the capability to recycle or reuse organic material.
