Lane Closures, Traffic Stoppages Planned On I-395 In Alexandria

After temporary restriping is complete, northbound lanes will be temporarily shifted to the right.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Interstate 395 lane closures and brief traffic stoppages will happen during nighttime hours on Saturday into Sunday in Alexandria.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the left and center northbound I-395 lanes over King Street will be closed from 11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 through 6 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18. Traffic stoppages along the northbound I-395 general purpose lanes lasting up to 20 minutes each will occur between midnight and 5 a.m. The closures do not apply to the I-395 Express Lanes.

Crews will be temporarily restriping lanes as part of the $13 million King Street over I-395 Bridge Rehabilitation project. Once the work is complete, northbound I-395 traffic will be temporarily shifted to the right.

The project is focused on rehabilitating the King Street bridge over I-395, built in 1970. The work includes repairing and resurfacing the concrete bridge deck, repairing bridge piers, abutments and bearings, adding pedestrian fences to the bridge railings, painting steel bridge beams and repairing King Street pavement adjacent to the bridges. Improvements for pedestrians will include a new westbound King Street pedestrian crossing at 30th Street South, widening of the King Street median sidewalk between 30th Street South and Menokin Drive, widening the westbound King Street sidewalk between 30th Street South and Park Center Drive, upgrading the curb ramps and pedestrian signals at King Street and Park Center Drive, eastbound King Street and Menokin Drive, and upgrading roadway lighting.

In just the project area, King Street sees around 43,000 vehicles a day, while I-395 averages up to 208,000 per day. The project is being funded with state and federal dollars with an estimated completion date in summer 2021. The project is expected to be complete in summer 2021.
