Long-Term Repairs Expected For Flood Damaged Alexandria Trail

The surging Holmes Run stream caused damage to a trail on July 8, according to the city.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Work to restore the closed portion of Holmes Run Trail will begin this week, the City of Alexandria announced Tuesday. The trail is closed west of the North Ripley Street to just west of North Beauregard Street.

Flooding on July 8 caused the Holmes Run stream to surge and damage the trail. The first phase of work will take several weeks, but this trail portion will be closed for a long-term period.

In addition to the damaged portion, the trail within Dora Kelley Nature Park is closed during repairs. Crews will be using several large trucks and heavy equipment. Pedestrians and cyclists should avoid the area. Detour routes for pedestrians and cyclists have been created between North Chambliss Street and North Pegram Street during the trail closure.
