Police: Harris Teeter, Other Businesses Sold Alcohol to Minors
Clerks at stores in West End, Old Town, Del Ray illegally sold alcohol to minors, police say.

Alexandria police arrested six people Thursday during alcohol compliance checks at businesses throughout the city.
Arrests were made at the Harris Teeter at 4641 Duke St. in the West End, Giant Food at 530 First St. in Old Town, and at four stores in Del Ray: 24 Hour Express Mart at 4007 Mount Vernon Ave., 7-Eleven at 1025 W. Glebe Road, 7-Eleven at 3421 Mount Vernon Ave. and Giant Food at 425 E. Monroe Ave.
Prior to the enforcement efforts, uniformed officers visited businesses throughout the city and provided education and awareness information for the businesses and their employees, according to the police department.

Officers used confidential informants under the age of 21 but above the age of 18 to attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages from 40 locations in Alexandria. The informants were instructed to enter the businesses and attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages.
If asked for identification, the informants showed the clerk their legal identification, which revealed they were under 21. If the sale of alcoholic beverages took place, officers entered the business and placed appropriate charges on the seller.
