Police: Suspect in Officer Shooting ‘Not Talking’

Sgt. Lemuel Houston reported to the Seminary Hill Association on the investigation into the shooting of Alexandria police officer Peter Laboy.

The man suspected of shooting Alexandria police officer Peter Laboy in the head Feb. 27 is refusing to talk to police, a police sergeant told members of the Seminary Hill Association Thursday night.

Kashif Bashir, 27, of Woodbridge has been charged with malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He remains in custody.

Sgt. Lemuel Houston said Thursday the motive in the shooting is still undetermined. “We don’t know the motive, because the person's not talking,” he said. “He’s not saying a word.”

Houston said Bashir has some sort of “fascination” with a person who worked at an office building in Old Town. That aspect of the events that led to the shooting remains under investigation.

“It was a horrible thing, and I actually don’t think that shot was intended for officer Laboy,” Houston said. “I think it was intended for someone else.”

Police accuse Bashir of shooting Laboy after he stopped the Alexandria Yellow Cab Bashir was driving in Old Town. A police chase ensued, and Fairfax County police chased the cab until it crashed off Fort Hunt Road.

Laboy had stopped the cab after police issued a lookout for a Alexandria Yellow Cab driver regarding a minor offense. Police have not specified with that offense was.

Laboy is recovering at Washington Hospital Center. Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook has said police have no firm motive behind the shooting.
