Water Damage In West End Alexandria Apartment Units Follows Fire

Nine people and three animals were displaced due to damages related to a fire in one apartment unit.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A fire at a multifamily residential building in West End Alexandria resulted in nine people and three animals being displaced, according to the fire department.

Around 10:40 p.m., units from Alexandria, Fairfax County and Arlington County responded to the building in the 4700 block of West Braddock Road. A fire was found and quickly extinguished in a second floor bedroom of an apartment.

Residents told fire marshals that the fire started when a candle fell onto a bed. A fire investigation confirmed the cause, and it was classified as an accidental fire.

The unit where the fire occurred was condemned due to fire and water damage, and residents found alternative accommodations. An adjacent unit was also condemned due to water and overhaul damage, and residents found alternative accommodations with assistance from Red Cross. Two other units had minor water damage but were not condemned, but those residents found other accommodations on their own. The estimated damages were around $75,000, according to the fire department.

The fire was one of two within 24 hours in Alexandria. A Wednesday morning fire at an Old Town home resulted in no injuries. That fire was caused by combustibles near a fireplace in a screened porch.
