Water Main Break Closes Street, Prompts Repairs In Alexandria

The water main break was reported near the Northern Virginia Detention Center.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A water main break closed a street in the West End of Alexandria Wednesday morning.

The incident was reported in the early morning hours in the 200 block of South Whiting Street. Police say both directions of South Whiting Street are closed from Stevenson Avenue to the front of the Northern Virginia Adult Detention Center. As of 8:43 a.m., WTOP Traffic reported the road closure as active. Drivers should follow police direction.

According to Virginia American Water, the issue was identified to be a broken water valve. While repairs were being conducted by Virginia American Water, some residents on South Whiting Street and Tower Court may have experienced low or no water pressure.

The water valve has been repaired, and water service is starting to be returned to some customers. As of 10 a.m., the utility service expects water service to be fully restored within two hours.

DASH Bus noted that riders can board and leave buses at the Edsall & Whiting stop and Stevenson & Whiting stop, but there is no service between the two stops due to the road closure.
