MLK Day 2019: What's Open, Closed In Puget Sound
Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day of service, but also a day when government buildings, banks, and more are closed.

SEATTLE, WA - Many people will have the day off from work on Monday to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. And that means some businesses and government offices will be closed - but the holiday also means free parking in some areas, and free entry to Washington state parks.
Here's a rundown of what's open and closed in Puget Sound for MLK Day 2019:
Government

- All local public school districts have the day off
- City, state and federal government buildings, including post offices, will be closed and there will be no mail delivery
- King and Pierce county libraries will be closed, and so will Seattle Public Library locations (the downtown library drop box will also be closed)
- Free entry to all Washington state parks
- Free entry to federal National Parks and forests (access may be hindered by the government shutdown)
Transportation
- Sound Transit: Link light rail runs on a Saturday schedule; Sounder and express buses run on weekday schedules.
- King County Metro: Reduced weekday service affects a few dozen routes.
- Pierce Transit: Regular weekday schedule in effect.
- Community Transit: Most buses run on regular weekday schedule; commuter buses to downtown Seattle and the University District will be reduced.
- Street parking is free in Seattle and Tacoma.
Shopping

- Most large grocery stores, shopping malls, and other retailers will be open. When in doubt, call ahead.
- Almost all banks will be closed. Walk-up and drive-thru ATM services will be available as usual.
