Skiers Are Literally Praying For Snow In The Cascades

At an event this week in North Bend, skiers will pray to the snow gods for mercy.

NORTH BEND, WA - The 2018-19 ski season has so far been pretty dry. Up at Snoqualmie Pass, just 13 inches of snow has fallen, not enough to open the slopes to skiers.

And, barring some miracle, the season might stay that way. There's an 80 percent chance that we'll have an El NiƱo winter in Washington, and that means warm, dry conditions.

So, a group of skiers will hold an event this week to, literally, pray for snow. The Summit at Snoqualmie will host the event at Compass Outdoor Adventures in North Bend on Friday.

If ever there were a time to contact the Snow God (or any god with the ability to create precipitation), it's now.

Of the four major ski resorts in Western Washington, only Crystal Mountain has opened (although it's closed Monday and Tuesday this week). Both Stevens Pass and Mt. Baker are closed, having received about as much snow as Snoqualmie Pass.

On a more secular level, the National Weather Service forecast does not look good for snow. The forecast calls for a totally dry, sunny, and very cold week up at Snoqualmie Pass.

If the prayers don't work, there will be alcoholic beverages available at Friday's event.
