Washington's Birth Rate Outpaced Nation In 2019

Washingtonians had more babies in 2019, leading a shortlist of eight other states that recorded growth in their birth rates over 2018. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Washington mothers had 86,085 babies in 2018. Census Bureau estimates show 2019 topped that total by 612 births.

While America's overall population grew by just 0.5 percent between 2018 and 2019, Washington state saw a 1.2 percent increase, adding 91,024 people to its population — the seventh-highest growth rate in the nation.

The News Tribune reports fewer births, and a higher number of deaths, gradually slowed population growth across the nation over the last decade. The Census Bureau projected the U.S. population would reach 330,222,422 by Jan. 1, 2020. An official census count happens every 10 years, and the next one takes place April 1, 2020.

California remains the nation's most populous state with an estimated 39,512,223 residents in 2019. Texas saw the most growth by raw numbers, adding 367,215 people.
