12 Edmonds Schools Slated for Energy Upgrades

Twelve schools in the Edmonds School District are expected to get new lighting and other energy efficiency upgrades thanks to a $798,000 state grant, the district said.

The lighting upgrade would replace about 3,900 obsolete and energy inefficient fixtures at up to nine schools: Alderwood Elementary, Beverly Elementary, Brier Elementary, Brier Terrace Middle School, College Place Middle School, Former Woodway High School, Martha Lake Elementary, Mountlake Terrace High School and Spruce Elementary.

The boiler/HVAC portion of the grant would:

• Replace the original boiler, recirculation pumps and digital interfaces for air handling units at Westgate Elementary;
• Provide a new heat source for the Maplewood Center therapy pool, which currently uses the main building boiler;
• Replace digital interfaces for zone-level air control units at Meadowdale High School.

The upgrades are expected to reduce the district’s annual utility expenses for gas and electricity by about $100,000 per year. The total cost for the projects, which are being recommended by the district’s Capital Projects Office, is about $2.8 million.
