37 Opioid Overdoses In 1 Week, Snohomish County Survey Finds

Ten people overdosed on an opioid in one day alone, according to a point-in-time count by Snohomish County.

EDMONDS, WA - The Snohomish County Health District this week published a startling snapshot of how the opioid crisis is hitting the county. In one week in July, 37 people overdosed on an opioid, including 10 on July 1 alone. Three of the overdose victims died.

The health district "Point-in-Time Survey" took place during the week of July 17 - 23. The data comes from reports by police, EMS, hospitals, and local clinics. Of the 37 overdoses, 24 were treated with naloxone, which counteracts opioid overdoses.

  • By gender, the overdoses were nearly evenly split: 18 women, 19 men
  • By age, half the people who overdosed were between 21 and 30; the youngest was 16, the oldest 52
  • 16 of the week's overdoses occurred between noon and 6 p.m.
  • 73 percent of the victims were white
  • 38 percent of the victims did not call 911 to report the overdose, which the health district suspects is due to the better availability of naloxone
  • 15 percent of overdoses took place in a private home; 13 percent happened in public
